The Bombay Gymkhana Ltd, Bombay

The City’s Iconic Sports and Recreation centre was constructed in 1875 as a British-only facility incorporating Cricket, Polo, Football and Shooting grounds, with additional activities added throughout the subsequent years (Rugby was introduced in 1890).
In 1917, the gymkhana underwent major extensions, which was one of Batley’s earliest projects. Preserving the architectural language and spirit, existing building materials were used to construct two gables on either side of the existing pavilion. These architectural masses were all tied together with a double corridor (veranda), which ran through the building connecting the two ends of the building and the site. The corridors overlooked the open grounds (Maidans). This provided a space for the members to sit and enjoy the various sporting events the club hosted, while also enhancing the gymkhana/County Club image and feel.
