The Mackinnon Mackenzie & Co. Building in Bombay is an imposing sandstone building, befitting its status as the leading shipping company in the Indian Raj.
Mackinnon, MacKenzie & Co was founded in 1847 in Calcutta by two enterprising Scotsmen, William Mackinnon and Robert MacKenzie and quickly became a major player in shipping.
It went on to form the Calcutta & Burmah Steam Navigation Co.
The building built on Ballard Estate was a purpose-built business and commercial district supervised by the Bombay Port Trust.
The building is of prime attraction for visitors as a grand statue of Neptune at its entrance looks out to the sea in a commanding pose showing the significance of the building from that era.
Ballard Estate is named after the Trust’s first chairman, General John Alex Ballard, the Ballard estate is a piece of English Renaissance Edwardian London cut off from the chaos of Victorian-Gothic Bombay.
The Chief Architect George Wittet ensured uniformity of Architectural style.
